The idea for Nixon's Engine Words came to me during my first year of motherhood. As a speech therapist, I had the privilege of using specific strategies to support my son Nixon's speech and language, and I wanted every family to have access to them, not just the ones already in therapy. Language-enhancing strategies aren't just for children with identified delays. They're for every child.

Each page features an "Engine Word," a powerful, single word that fuels communication. Words like "help" and "want" can stand alone to express a child's needs today, and grow into longer sentences as your child does. In the book, Nixon uses each Engine Word during an everyday activity, the same routines you're probably already doing at home. That's on purpose: first words don't require special lessons. They happen in the small, ordinary moments you're already sharing with your child.

At the bottom of every page is a caregiver tip. Think of it as me, right there in your home, modeling the strategy with you.
